Insights about the Process of Growing Coffee

The process of growing coffee on plantations now exists all over the world. However, this plant can best grow in warm humid climates that allow it to flourish and flower. There are three procedures involved in growing coffee: these are harvesting, processing and grading.

In the harvesting process, the fruit of the coffee plant will turn to a radiant red when ripe. Since coffee fruits do not ripen at the same time, you can harvest most of them by hand. Experienced pickers pick the ripe red coffee fruits for a few weeks. When it comes to coffee processing, there are two methods to be followed, the dry method and the wet method. The particular method that is used would depend on the size and technological advancement of the coffee plantation. In the dry method, the coffee cherries are spread out on big drying mats in the sun. Within a matter of one or two weeks, the coffee beans are dried, and ready for grading and sorting. Meanwhile, the wet method enables cherries to be fermented in huge concrete tanks and dried either in the sun or mechanically.

During the coffee grading process, the beans are passed through screens in order to match their size and quality. After the screening method, they are then graded for export purposes. This grading occurs by checking for imperfections on the quality of the beans, as well as size and any other deficiencies, since these can affect the flavour of the final coffee product. So, the next time you enjoy a hot cup of coffee, remember all the work that goes into creating this delicious, stimulating beverage.
