The Kingdom of  Tonga consists of 170 islands located at the heart of what is known as the "South Seas Triangle" at Latitude 20 00 S and Longitude 175 00 W. By Appointment to His Majesty the King of Tonga, Tongan coffee is both rare and unique. Comprising pure Arabica of the Typica, Caturra, and Catimor varieties, this is the work of a few smallholding farms and the King of Tonga's own farm. Coffee was originally grown in the late 19th century, but was resurrected three decades ago and production remains very low.

It is well known that coffees produced in proximity to the sea develop a special character since the large body of water generates thermal air currents carrying moisture, as well as trace elements, which contribute to the overall taste profile of the coffee. The  South Seas have this effect on Royal Tonga Coffee and give it its distinctive character. Indeed, this jungle coffee has a distinctive and mild flavour with some flashes of acidity and a touch of spices.
