Grown 1,830 metres above sea level on the islands of Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile and the highest lake in Africa, this coffee is grown by Ethiopian Orthodox monks on monasteries situated on the numerous islands.
One of the coffee-growing islands is Daga Estephanos where, according to Ethiopian Christian tradition, the Ark of the Covenant was hidden in 1535 during the invasion of warlord Ahmed Gragn The Left Handed. Proceeds help to repair the roofs of the monasteries in order to protect the cultural treasures kept there.
